The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has completed nine weeks of intensive work on the Red Line subway between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights, restoring full service yesterday to the Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda stations.
The summer construction project enabled crews to complete critical infrastructure improvements while advancing investments that improve the ridership experience, WMATA officials said in a press release.
At Bethesda, crews built a new mezzanine structure on the platform in preparation for the Maryland Transit Administration's Purple Line light-rail service, which is slated to start in late 2027. The 6,000-square-foot mezzanine structure includes two new escalators, two new elevators, a new station manager kiosk and faregates. Continued construction on the Bethesda mezzanine, including the bridge to the elevator banks, will be done behind protective barriers during the next 18 months.
At Grosvenor-Strathmore, crews upgraded lighting, installed new passenger information displays, replaced platform tiles, upgraded station shelters and benches, improved drainage and rehabilitated platform edges. They also completed aerial structure work along the closed stretch of track, WMATA officials said.
