WMATA launches webpage to monitor repairs on damaged substation

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has created a project webpage to keep riders and community members informed about its effort to rebuild the traction power substation near the Stadium-Armory substation.

Last month, a fire heavily damaged the substation, which led to service disruptions along the Blue, Orange and Silver lines.

Following a week of equipment testing, the effort to restore the unit remains on track for completion this calendar year, which is about three months sooner than originally expected, WMATA officials said in a press release.

The unit converts A/C commercial power to D/C power, which is used to move trains via the third rail. While repairs are underway to rebuild the substation, WMATA is harnessing power from two smaller substations farther away.

Normal service will return on the affected lines once the substation is repaired.
