VIA Rail inaugurates rehabbed Brockville station
VIA Rail Canada Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Yves Desjardins-Siciliano yesterday met with local officials in Brockville, Ontario, to inaugurate the city's newly renovated train station.
Through a $1 million (in Canadian dollars) repair project, the railroad modernized the 143-year-old building while ensuring to highlight its historical character, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.
Renovation work included a new roof, building envelope, lighting system and finishes; the replacement of doors and windows; and construction of a passenger shelter. The passenger railroad's crews also demolished an old building adjacent to the station, relocated the station's outdoor mural and installed an automatic door to support building accessibility. Additionally, workers constructed a new display system for train schedules.
"This investment, made possible through funding from the government of Canada, will help ensure that travelers enjoy the best possible service as traffic continues to grow in the Ontario-Quebec corridor," said Desjardins-Siciliano.
