CARTA scopes out land for intermodal hub following sale of Dorchester property
The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) in Charleston, S.C., has sold a 36.2-acre property that it had originally planned to use as an intermodal hub.
Rushmark Properties LLC purchased the land at 4894 Dorchester Road for $6.5 million, according to a CARTA press release.
Plans to use the Dorchester Road property were nixed following permitting issues, but the agency is now eyeing an 8-acre site on Gaynor Avenue that includes the current Charleston Amtrak station.
"The intermodal facility will be a new gateway to the region," said Jeff Burns, interim director of CARTA.
CARTA's board voted to tap North Charleston city officials to lead in the construction and operation of the new intermodal facility, which would serve as a central point for Amtrak trains, Southeastern Stages buses and taxis.
