Norfolk Southern Railway's crew at the company's hump yard in Bellevue, Ohio, recently achieved a milestone: processing about 2,600 rail cars in single shift, including over 1,100 in a single shift.
Additionally, the NS workers processed the cars without a single safety incident, NS officials said in a Story Yard report.
"When you think about a hump operation, it’s like an assembly line,” said Assistant Superintendent J.R. Elliott. “Cars arrive; you feed the hump, and the hump feeds the bowl. Then you pull back to react and respond safely so you can keep producing high over the hill.”
The company's goal at the yard is to align capability and resources with volume to maximize operations to serve customers faster. Doing so requires leaders and crews to work together closely to safely fine-tune processes, ensure clear communication and provide the right support at the right time, NS officials explained.
The recent achievement at the Bellevue Yard was executed so well because everyone pulled together, NS officials said.
