Union Pacific Railroad is getting ready to launch a $16.8 million track improvement project on a line between Bloom, Kan., and Stratford, Texas.
To begin May 23, the project calls for removing and installing 122,000 ties, spreading 98,000 tons of rock ballast and replacing road surfaces at 144 grade crossings. UP expects to complete the work by late August.
The project is part of the railroad's $1.6 billion capex budget for 2008.
