UP to upgrade Nebraska line segment

Union Pacific Railroad recently began a more than $6 million project aimed at upgrading a five-mile line running through Grand Island, Neb.
The project calls for removing and installing about 13,500 concrete ties, installing five miles of rail and renewing surfaces at seven grade crossings. In May, crews replaced four switches, and in September, workers replaced the seven crossing surfaces. The new ties and rail will be replaced starting today, with work concluding Nov. 19, UP officials said in a prepared statement.
During the project, crews will use the TRT 909 track renewal train, which can install rail and concrete ties in one pass. The 30-car is designed to install up to 6,000 ties in a twelve-hour work day.
The project is part of UP’s $3.3 billion capital spending budget for 2011.
