Union Pacific Railroad has plans to begin a major tie project on Metra’s UP-North Line in northern Illinois, Metra announced in a press release.
The project to replace 68,000 ties is slated to begin Sept. 20, Metra officials said. The ties will be replaced on 45 miles of track between the Ravenswood Station and Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Work is expected to last through the end of November and will be performed at night to minimize commuter-rail service disruptions.
"Tie replacement is essential and must be done at regular intervals to maintain track speeds and service levels," said Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski.
The Class I owns and maintains the three UP lines in Metra's system.
