Rail News: Maintenance Of Way

CSXT to use ZETA-TECH's broken-rail detection software

ZETA-TECH Associates Inc. recently obtained a three-year contract from CSX Transportation for RailTest® broken-rail risk analysis and ultrasonic rail test scheduling software. The railroad plans to use the software to identify broken or defective rail and prevent derailments along its 21,000-mile system.

RailTest is designed to quantify the risk of broken rail on a segment-by -segment basis and determine ultrasonic testing frequency for each track segment. Users can assign risk levels to line segments based on traffic levels, commodities and other factors.

Introduced by ZETA-TECH in 1997, RailTest is used by BNSF Railway Co., United Kingdom-based Network Rail and the London Underground, and Swedish railroad Banverket. BNSF has reported a 30 percent reduction in broken-rail-caused derailments and incidents since the Class I began using the software in 1998, according to ZETA-TECH officials.
