U.S. court lifts remote-control-related injunction against BLE

A U.S. district court recently lifted a preliminary injunction against the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers issued in January 2002.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Conrail, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad obtained the injunction to prevent BLE from striking as the railroads implemented locomotive remote controls (LRC) and assigned LRC work to conductors and trainmen represented by United Transportation Union.

The court ruled the preliminary injunction was issued to "maintain the status quo" until an arbitrator could resolve the railroads' and unions' LRC dispute, and that an arbitration award was issued in January 2003 that resolved the issue, according to a prepared statement.
