Rail News: Mechanical
RailPower Technologies Corp. is taking its hybrid power system technology beyond yard locomotives. Today, the company announced it reached an agreement with Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp. (OTB) under which the firm will license RailPower’s technology for marine applications, and supply hybrid power systems to tug and barge operators, towboat builders and shipyards.
RailPower — which markets the Green Goat® and Green Kid® switchers that feature 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries — will supply OTB hybrid and multi-engine system kits.
“A tug is very much a water-borne switcher with similar work profiles that can greatly benefit from RailPower's hybrid technology,” said OTB President Bob Hill in a prepared statement.
The agreement won’t affect RailPower’s core focus on locomotives, said President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier.
