Yesterday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Rail Division officially commissioned the No. 1869 “City Of Durham” commuter locomotive, which the department will use to help provide its daily Piedmont passenger-rail service. The newly refurbished locomotive was one of three purchased with federal stimulus funds and entered service last week, NCDOT officials said in a prepared statement. The locomotive refurbishment followed the renovation of the Durham Train Depot two years ago. Both projects were designed to recognize Durham’s history of rail service in North Carolina, NCDOT officials said. “With recent revitalization activities in downtown Durham and increased investments throughout the city, we have seen how investments in the city’s infrastructure have made business investments in Durham even more attractive, which has a positive impact on our economy,” said Durham Mayor Bill Bell.
