Metrolink puts first of refurbished rail cars into service

Metrolink yesterday placed into service a newly refurbished passenger car, the first of 50 slated for renovation at the Southern California regional railroad.

The cars will offer upgraded amenities, including vinyl seating and non-carpeted flooring for easier cleaning, enhanced air filtration and UV lighting, energy-efficient lighting and improved odor control for bathrooms, Metrolink officials said in a press release.

The cars will also feature side-door obstacle detection sensors, emergency intercom buttons and emergency fresh air ventilation in the event of power loss.

Metrolink’s 121-car fleet was built by Bombardier Inc. between 1992 and 2002. While all cars undergo regular maintenance, some of the older vehicles were in need of a "mid-life makeover," Metrolink officials said. The order to rebuild the 50 rail cars was placed with the Talgo-SYSTRA joint venture in June 2019.

"The cars have a contemporary interior, charging ports at each seat and a number of enhancements providing passengers with a safer and more comfortable ride with elevated amenities," said Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle.

The transit agency expects to have 17 refurbished cars in service by year’s end, while all 50 should be available by early 2024.
