RailPower Technologies Corp. recently reached an agreement with "a major Class I" to test a Green Goat® hybrid locomotive for five years in the Los Angeles Harbor area under a long-term lease. The company declined to identify the railroad.
In March, RailPower qualified for funding under the Carl Moyer Program, which is providing $25 million to a variety of California projects designed to reduce NOx and other emissions produced by on and off-road engines, including locomotive, marine and auxiliary power units.
"We are excited about the introduction of an emissions-reducing hybrid locomotive into the L.A. Harbor area, which is very close to homes," said Barry Wallerstein, executive director of program fund administrator South Coast Air Quality Management District, in a prepared statement.
Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, 2,000-horsepower Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and fuel use about 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.
"This [transaction] demonstrates we now have the ability to offer
railroads the flexibility of leasing this technology while ensuring we meet
our commitments to Carl Moyer to keep the locomotive in the L.A. Basin for a minimum of five years," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier.
