UP orders 60 low-emission Gen-Set switchers from National Railway Equipment

Union Pacific Railroad recently contracted National Railway Equipment Co. to build 60 low-emission diesel locomotives for use in the Class I’s Los Angeles Basin yards.
UP expects the “Generator-Set” switchers to reduce emissions up to 80 percent and reduce fuel consumption up to 40 percent compared with conventional locomotives.
The 2,100-horsepower locomotives will be powered by three 700-horsepower low-emissions U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3-certified diesel engines. UP will take delivery of 30 locomotives this year; the remainder will be delivered in 2007.
In 2002, UP began testing a Gen-Set switcher in the Long Beach and Los Angeles, Calif., areas.
