Tomorrow, Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway will submit their proposed merger application to the Surface Transportation Board, the Class Is announced today.
In late July, the railroads announced their intention to combine in an $85 billion deal that, if approved by the STB, will create the nation's first coast-to-coast transcontinental freight railroad. The companies’ management teams will co-host a conference call and live webcast for financial analysts at 8:45 a.m. ET tomorrow, UP and NS officials said in a press release.
If approved, the railroads together will seamlessly connect over 50,000 route miles across 43 states and link with about 100 ports.
In November, shareholders at both companies approved the proposal.
In their application to the STB, the railroads will explain how they believe their combined rail network will provide safer, faster and more reliable service and increased competition to a broad range of stakeholders, according to a UP-NS joint website. The companies have said they anticipate closing on the merger by early 2027.
