Cando Rails & Terminals has announced plans to double the size of its Sturgeon multipurpose rail terminal in Alberta.
Cando purchased 320 acres west of the existing terminal, and the plans involve an investment of up to C$200 million, Cando officials said in a press release. The company anticipates completing engineering design by the end of this year, with plans to start construction in second-quarter 2025.
Presently, the Sturgeon terminal is the largest private rail terminal in Canada, according to the company. It employs more than 60 people and can stage and store3,600 rail cars across 302 acres. The expansion is estimated to create up to 50 new jobs and will have the capacity for up to 2,500 more rail cars in a storage-in-transit yard and up to 1,150 spaces on arrival and departure tracks. This will allow Cando to stage 12,000-foot trains.
The company is partnering with its customer Dow, a chemical manufacturer, to support its Path2Zero net-zero emissions facility project. Dow will be an anchor tenant in the expanded terminal, Cando Rail officials said.
