The U.S. Class I workforce expanded slightly in April, growing for the second straight month. As of mid-April, the large roads employed 161,876 people, a 0.8 percent increase compared with March’s level and 3.3 percent gain versus April 2011, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.

Four segments increased on a month-over-month basis: maintenance-of-way and structures, 2.1 percent to 36,904; transportation (other than transportation and engine), 1.2 percent to 6,802; transportation (T&E), 0.8 percent to 65,124; and maintenance of equipment and stores, 0.1 percent to 29,775. The number of professional and administrative staff declined 0.3 percent to 13,727, and number of executives, officials and staff assistants dipped 0.1 percent to 9,544.

All six categories posted gains versus 2011 levels: maintenance-of-way and structures, 3.7 percent; transportation (T&E), 3.6 percent; executives, officials and staff assistants, 3.3 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, 3.2 percent; transportation (other than T&E), 2.1 percent; and professional and administrative, 1.1 percent.
