On April 12, former United Transportation Union International Vice President Don Miller died. He was 94.
Miller served as a member of the National Railroad Adjustment Board’s first division until he retired in November 1971. He also was a member of UTU Local 1238 in Vancouver, Wash.
In 1926, Miller began his railroading career as a laborer in Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway’s (SP&S) Vancouver shops. He later served as a hostler, fireman and engineer.
In 1928, Miller joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen’s Lodge 783 and was elected SP&S general chairperson. In 1946, he was appointed acting vice president, then elected alternate vice president a year later. In 1951, Miller was elected vice president and re-elected at succeeding conventions through unification with the UTU. He was re-elected as international VP at UTU’s 1971 convention.
