Union Pacific Railroad recently contracted Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) to supply and install an automated gate system at a new Dallas intermodal terminal. UP plans to use the system to automatically identify and process containers, trucks, chassis and drivers at entry and exit gates, and perform traffic-routing, security and record-keeping functions.
SAIC's Security and Transportation Technology business unit will supply the system, which features optical character recognition (OCR) and biometrics. OCR portals are designed to read equipment numbers and capture high-resolution images of containers for online damage inspections. In gate lanes, an ultrasonic fingerprint-scanning device will be installed in kiosks to identify truck drivers and process driver transactions automatically.
"Our expertise in systems integration and experience at other intermodal facilities helped us define a system tailored to the needs of this terminal," said William Kelly, business unit senior vice president and general manager, in a prepared statement.
An information technology, systems integration and e-solution service provider, SAIC has installed similar gate systems at five other UP intermodal facilities.
