Port Everglades eclipsed 1 million TEU mark in FY2014
Port Everglades in fiscal-year 2014 handled 1,013,344 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the first time the South Florida port exceeded 1 million TEUs in a fiscal year.
The TEUs — a standard cargo container measurement — were about evenly split between imports and exports in FY2014, which ended Sept. 30. The Broward County port attributes the milestone to continued growth in existing and new containerized cargo services.
"This is a huge accomplishment for our seaport and a credit to our customers who continued to build their businesses through the global recession with an eye towards the future," said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak in a press release.
Located in the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania Beach, Port Everglades is in the heart of one of the world's largest consumer regions. The port has direct access to nearby interstates and a newly opened, 43-acre Florida East Coast Railway intermodal hub.
