OmniTRAX and Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon officials yesterday marked the grand opening of the Mount Vernon Railroad, a new switching railroad that will serve the port.

The Mount Vernon port handles an average of 25,000 rail cars annually. It is also home to a 500-acre megasite, where the port is investing $25 million to support to support steel, automotive, plastics, energy and heavy industrial growth, and attract large multimodal industries that rely on barge and rail transportation, port officials said in a press release.

Owned by the port and operated by OmniTRAX, the new railroad will coordinate rail connections and assemble outbound trains for interchange with the Evansville Western Railway, which provides direct access to BNSF Railway Co., CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

“This new partnership with OmniTRAX creates a tremendous opportunity for growth in southwest Indiana by supporting existing business and attracting new investment,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce David Adams.
