Earlier this month, Johnstown America Corp. delivered the last of 50 articulated bulk-container (ABC) cars to water and wastewater residual-disposal company Synagro Technologies Inc.

Synagro subsidiary Environmental Protection and Improvement Company (EPIC) is using the 90-foot, two-platform cars to move containers of biosolids and other solid-waste materials from the East Coast throughout the United States.

Designed to share a common truck assembly, the lightweight intermodal cars include an articulated connector and two standard 40-foot container capacity. The cars enable containers to be double-stacked or loaded individually at two intermediate positions near the articulated truck.

"Working with all Class I railroads, ABC cars transport the majority of the materials we manage for both beneficial reuse and disposal," said Dave Iverson, EPIC vice president of rail operations, in a prepared statement.
