Total intermodal volume fell 2% to 4.6 million containers and trailers in fourth-quarter 2025 compared to the previous year's Q4, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) announced yesterday.
Although domestic container originations grew 2.2% to 2.3 million units during Q4 2025, international containers dropped 4.7% to 2.2 million and trailers dropped 23.1% to 121,964. For the full year, total volume rose 2.3% to 18.5 million containers and trailers, IANA officials said in a press release.
"While aggregate intermodal volume weakened by 2% year-over-year for Q4 2025, the domestic market actually decoupled from this trend, showing 2.2% growth,” said Andrew Sibold, IANA’s director of economics. “This stands in sharp contrast to the 4.7% drop in international containers.”
Only three of the seven highest-density trade corridors, which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume, registered gains in Q4 2025. By volume, the Trans-Canada jumped 10.8%; the Northeast-Midwest rose 3%; and the intra-Southeast edged up 0.8%. Volume in the South Central-Southwest fell 4.3% and in the Midwest-Southwest contracted 9.9%. The Southeast-Southwest and the Midwest-Northwest posted 12.9% and 19.7% declines, respectively.
