Georgia Ports Authority commemorates new highway bridge over ICTF tracks

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and Georgia Department of Transportation officials recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Highway 307 Overpass at the Port of Savannah.
Located outside the port’s major gate complex, the new overpass will route cargo trucks over six tracks at the Mason Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), where GPA plans to soon to complete a major expansion project. The $22.5 million overpass is slated to open for traffic later this month.
“This particular road project provides even stronger freight handling via road and rail to and from the fastest growing region of the United States,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz in a prepared statement. “The Highway 307 improvements work in tandem with other state and GPA projects that seamlessly link two interstate systems, an extensive rail network and the Port of Savannah.”
The overpass is part of a cargo beltway designed to provide direct access from the Garden City Terminal to Interstates 95 and 16. In addition to ongoing rail extensions at the Mason ITCF, the port is pursuing other improvements that will enable Norfolk Southern Railway trains to enter the rail yard from the northwest instead of looping through Garden City to enter from the east.
“This enhancement will drastically reduce the use of 21 at-grade crossings and improve efficiency at the Mason ICTF,” port officials said, adding that Garden City is the only East Coast terminal featuring two on-site intermodal yards served by two Class Is, NS and CSX Transportation.
