Portuguese railroad purchases optical system to identify containers, trucks at terminal entrance

Portuguese railroad Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses E.P. recently contracted Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) to supply, install and test an optical character recognition (OCR) system designed to automatically identify inbound containers and truck license plates at the railroad's Lisbon intermodal terminal.

SAIC will install its IIS system, which includes cameras, lighting, sensors and OCR processors that can capture images of a container's four sides and a truck's license plates as vehicles enter a terminal.

The 1,900-mile Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses moves about 9.3 million tons of freight and transports 178 million passengers annually.

An employee-owned research and engineering firm, SAIC offers information technology and electronics services.
