Rail News: Intermodal

Virginia needs to promote, help fund intermodal service to relieve I-81 truck-traffic congestion, study says

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation recently released a study that analyzed north-south truck and intermodal traffic along Interstate 81. The department commissioned the study because state officials believe increasing highway traffic soon will exceed road capacity.

The study tried to gauge marketplace demand for improved intermodal service along the corridor, the amount of public investment needed to improve intermodal service and the type of transportation service that would best relieve corridor congestion.

The study recommends diverting more truck traffic from I-81 to intermodal, which would require substantial corridor-wide investments to improve rail infrastructure, according to a prepared statement.

The state now must decide whether to provide funds to help develop a competitive intermodal service along corridor.
