The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) recently approved a $28.5 billion six-year improvement program (SYIP) that allocates project funding for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).
Effective July 1, the plan designates funding for more than 4,300 projects across Virginia's roads, bridges, rail infrastructure, transit systems and bicycle and pedestrian paths. The SYIP is updated every year, DRPT officials said in a press release.
Over the full six years, the plan calls for $930 million to support public transportation programs, including the Virginia Railway Express and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. About $19.7 million in state funding will go toward rail planning and freight-rail projects.
The DRPT's fiscal-year 2027 budget was set at more than $1.1 billion, the majority designated for transit services, DRPT officials said. Nearly $931 million will support transit initiatives; $37.7 million goes toward rail projects; and $181.1 million is allocated to the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority.
