Bombardier Transportation increases income, logs more orders in third quarter

Yesterday, Bombardier Inc. reported third-quarter net income of $74 million compared with a $9 million net loss in third-quarter 2005.

Bombardier Transportation contributed to the profitability; the value of the division’s third-quarter orders rose 33 percent to $2.8 billion compared with the same 2005 period. In recent weeks, Bombardier has obtained sizable contracts from South Africa’s Gauteng Provincial Government, Sociéte Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais and Transport for London. As of Oct. 31, the division’s new order backlog stood at $23.4 billion compared with Jan. 31’s backlog of $20.9 billion.

In addition, Bombardier Transportation’s earnings before income taxes rose 59 percent to $62 million. But revenue remained flat at $1.5 billion.
