The U.S. Transportation Department of Transportation (USDOT) yesterday announced $4.7billion in grants are available for infrastructure and service improvements along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC).

The funds will be used to upgrade station infrastructure, rebuild bridges and streamline rail services. The first round of applications for program funding will focus on “high priority” major station projects, including New York Penn Station in New York City and Washington Union Station in Washington, D.C., according to the USDOT.

“The Northeast Corridor is the busiest and most complex rail line in America,” said Federal Railroad Administrator David Fink in a press release, adding that modernizing some of the nation’s flagship  stations will help improve safety.

As part of the Intercity Passenger Rail grant program, the Federal-State Partnership-Northeast Corridor Program aims to reduce backlogs, streamline performance and expand or establish new intercity passenger-rail service along the NEC.

The USDOT is accepting applications for the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program funding until May 5. The billions of dollars in the notice of funding opportunity cover fiscal years 2025 and 2026.
