Yesterday, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) hosted its inaugural Rail Tech Summit in Washington, D.C., to highlight innovative technologies and tools in the rail industry.

The event featured keynote addresses from Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury and Federal Railroad Administrator David Fink, panel discussions with industry leaders and stakeholders, and attendee interactions with more than a dozen displayed rail technologies.

The technologies included a portable inspection portal that uses artificial intelligence to proactively monitor rail-car wear to help identify issues; and the FRA’s automated track inspection program through which the agency is noting success in working with major railroads to increase the use of automated track inspection technology to identify defects sooner and prevent accidents.

American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker participated in one of the panel discussions to highlight what the FRA and short lines are doing jointly to boost safety

We explored the crucial link between technology, innovation and safety,” he said in a press releaseWhen short lines are able to deploy new technology, we are able to increase efficiency, grow volumes and enhance safety at even the smallest of railroads.”

Several Class I executives commented on the summit and technology in the release:

[We] appreciate the FRA hosting this important event, bringing together so many voices committed to the future of rail. “We value the opportunity to work closely together as we continue advancing our shared commitment to safety through innovation and cutting-edge technology.”  BNSF Railway Vice President of Safety Chad Sundem

“From advanced inspection tools to smarter operating systems, many of the solutions showcased today are already helping railroads prevent incidents, move goods more efficiently and provide the reliable service customers and communities count on.”  CSX Assistant Vice President Stephen Flippin

“CPKC’s industry-leading train accident safety statistics come from integrating our data analytics and detection technologies into our everyday operations. We will continue to use our technology to gather and analyze data to anticipate and address potential issues before they happen.”  CPKC AVP for Government Affairs Larry Lloyd
