APTA targets ad campaign at congressional action on transportation bill

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has launched an advertising campaign to highlight the benefits of public transportation as Congress continues debating legislation that would fund surface transportation for the next several years.

With a March 31 expiration date approaching for the eighth and latest extension to SAFETEA-LU, the current surface transportation legislation, the ads will be posted in Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail stations that serve the U.S. Capitol and House and Senate office buildings, APTA officials said in a prepared statement. Advertisements also will appear in WMATA rail cars and on buses.

“Our goal is to highlight the urgency for Congress to pass a multi-year transportation bill that protects critical public transportation infrastructure and provides for long-term investment,” said APTA President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Melaniphy. “The message is crystal clear. In addition to moving Americans, public transportation helps to create jobs, boosts our economy and provides for energy independence as the nation faces rising gas prices.”
