Ohio grade crossing upgrades advance, Illinois grade separation remains under study

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) directing CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway to install flashing lights and gates at two grade crossings.
CSXT must install lights and gates at the Lafayette Road/State Route 42 crossing in Medina County by May 2, 2013. Funding for the upgrades will be shared by the railroad, PUCO and ORDC.
NS must install lights and roadway gates at the Farmington Road/County Road 66 crossing in Montgomery County by Feb. 4, 2013. Funding for the upgrades will be covered by federal dollars.
Meanwhile, the village of Barrington, Ill., held a public information meeting yesterday regarding a proposed grade separation of U.S. Route 14 (Northwest Highway) and a CN line.
The village previously received a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery II, or TIGER II, grant to study alternatives for implementing the grade separation. The village expects to choose a preferred alternative next year.
