Ohio utilities commission OKs three grade crossing upgrades; Washington transportation commission funds one crossing upgrade
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved construction authorization for the installation of flashing lights and gates at three grade crossings.
CSX Transportation will upgrade the Chippewa Road crossing in Medina County; Norfolk Southern Railway will upgrade the Emerson Road/Township Road crossing in Pickaway Township; and Ashland Railway will upgrade the Myers Road crossing in Richland County. The railroads will be responsible for completing all work by June 6, 2013.
Funding for the Medina County upgrade will be shared by PUCO, the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC), CSXT and the county; funding for the Pickaway Township upgrade will covered by federal dollars; and funding for the Richland County upgrade will be shared by PUCO, ORDC and Ashland Railway.
Meanwhile, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) approved the allocation of $9,686 from the Grade Crossing Protective Fund to help pay for upgrades to a BNSF Railway Co./West Adams Street crossing in Connell.
About 31 freight and two passenger trains operate over the crossing daily at speeds up to 45 mph.
The UTC funds will cover a pedestrian warning bell as part of the upgrades, which must be completed by Dec. 31.
