Amtrak revamps operations to strengthen performance, service


Amtrak officials are reorganizing operations management into four business lines as part of a broader strategy to establish clear accountability for financial performance of individual trains and to improve customer service.

The plan’s initial step calls for hiring general managers to run each of the four business lines: Northeast Corridor services; long-distance services; state-supported services; and commuter services.

The new GMs will report to Vice President of Operations D.J. Stadtler and will have full accountability for profit and loss of their respective business lines, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.

“Operations is not about moving trains, it’s about moving customers who pay for our services and that must always be what drives our actions,” said Stadtler.

The changes also will help structure Amtrak to grow as business needs and opportunities grow, railroad officials said. When the reorganization is complete, there will be fewer layers of management from top to bottom and less bureaucracy, Stadtler said, adding that the plan does not include any service reductions.

The reorganization plan will be rolled out in phases during the next 16 months with completion slated for October 2013.
