Union Pacific Railroad issued a statement late last week confirming that CEO Jim Vena recently met with President Donald Trump at the White House Oval Office to discuss the proposed merger between UP and Norfolk Southern Railway.
Vena and Trump "discussed how creating an American transcontinental railroad is a win for U.S. competition, consumers and the unionized workers whose jobs will be protected when the merger is approved, allowing railroads to grow and take more trucks off taxpayer funded highways," the UP statement said. "They also addressed the safety and security of all Americans, and that we regularly collaborate with communities to keep our employees and customers’ cargo safe."
UP issued the statement following the president's remarks on Fox News on Sept. 12, in which Trump said Vena asked him to send National Guard troops to Chicago, St. Louis and Memphis, according to a CNN report of the Fox News interview.
Trump did not share his opinion about the proposed UP-NS merger, CNN reported.
