The city of Edmonton, Alberta, and design-build contractor Ledcor last week announced a milestone for the Capital Line South light-rail extension from Century Park to Ellerslie Road.

The bridge girders have been installed for the new Blackmud Creek light-rail bridge. The installation process began on April 30 and was completed in five days. Crews installed 12 large girders using heavy cranes.

With the girders now in place, crews can advance formwork, rebar installation and the pouring of the structure's top deck, city officials said in a press release.

The extension will be completed in two phases. The first phase is under construction and will run 2.8 miles as a high-floor light-rail transit line. It will include an underpass at 23rd Avenue, bridges crossing Blackmud Creek and Anthony Henday Drive, and new stations in the Twin Brooks and Heritage Valley North neighborhoods.

Conceptual design work is advancing for the second phase, which will extend the line from Ellerslie Road to Allard/Desrochers. Major construction work is anticipated to take four to five years to complete, followed by testing and commissioning.
