Union Pacific Railroad yesterday marked the opening of its intermodal terminal in Kansas City, Kansas, the fourth UP intermodal facility opened since 2021.
The Kansas City Intermodal Terminal (KCIT) is located near several highway and interstate arteries that will provide shippers seamless access to UP’s intermodal rail network with fast, truck-competitive transit times, UP officials said in a press release.
The terminal will serve domestic and international containerized shipments of grains, consumer goods, refrigerated products and auto parts in the Midwest region. UP officials anticipate the terminal will help convert more truck traffic to rail, which will reduce congestion on the nation’s highways and lower greenhouse gas emissions, they said. The site includes two paved parking lots and additional working tracks for peak efficiency and is designed with precision gate technology to provide truckers with automatic entry and exit.
UP also announced it will shift its KCIT domestic service from the intermodal container transfer facility terminal in Long Beach, California, to the city of Industry terminal in Southern California. Domestic units moving to KCIT will benefit from UP's expedited premium network six days a week, with just over 2.5 days transit time, UP officials said.
Meanwhile, UP said it is now offering a faster Z train service that connects the Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal in Southern California directly to Chicago's metroplex through the Class I's Global 2 Intermodal Terminal. The service offers a three-day transit time. For now, the service is available five days a week, but that may be expanded in the future, UP officials said in a customer service announcement.
