Alstom’s pilot project on autonomous driving is entering the next phase, testing automation in regional rail transit via the European train control system (ETCS). The tests will occur in northern Germany, with Lower Saxony’s Ministry of Economics funding the project with 5.5 million euros to buy necessary equipment for two test vehicles. The trials will test signal recognition, object detection and remote control while evaluating safety standards. Ultimately, the project will determine whether the existing regulatory framework for automatic train operation could be adapted to autonomous driving.

Rolling Stock Solutions LLC (RSS) announced a new leasing platform that would provide like-new locomotives to commuter-rail agencies seeking to replace and improve aging fleets. The offering is in partnership with Alternate Concepts Inc., a full-service heavy- and light-rail operator. The initial RSS fleet will include fully overhauled F40PH locomotives completely rebuilt to like-new condition, RSS officials said in a press release. Lease contracts are duration-flexible and eligible for capital investment funding from the Federal Transit Administration.
