Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals

Indiana Rail Road to boost train speed through Bloomington

Beginning Oct. 15, the Indiana Rail Road Co. (INRD) plans to increase train speed on a line that cuts through the Indiana University campus and Bloomington, Ind.

The 500-mile regional will increase the speed limit from 10 mph to 25 mph. INRD has completed a multi-million-dollar upgrade of the right of way through Bloomington — including new rail and ties, and drainage improvements — to accommodate the higher speed.

Instead of it taking a mile-long train traveling 10 mph about six minutes to pass through a grade crossing in Bloomington, it now will take slightly more than two minutes, INRD officials said in a prepared statement.

"Our improvements in Bloomington represent an important step forward in terms of moving freight more efficiently," said INRD President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Hoback.

The regional has posted dozens of "No Trespassing" signs along the right of way to help bolster safety while the train speed is increased.
