Prince Rupert pact adds to CN's arsenal of 'service-level' agreements

Chalk up another intermodal service agreement for CN. On Friday, the Class I announced it reached a service-level agreement with the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) and Maher Terminals Holding Corp. to promote the British Columbia port’s role as a preferred West Coast gateway for central Canada and U.S. Midwest markets, and better measure port performance. CN recently reached similar agreements with the Port of Halifax and its two container terminal operators, Port Metro Vancouver and two of its terminal operators, and the Port of Quebec and one of its terminal operators.

The PRPA/Maher Terminals pact establishes performance targets, customer service measures and productivity indicators aimed at improving the flow of containers through the Prince Rupert gateway, including specific times for unloading and loading containers between vessels and rail cars, terminal dwell times, and CN transit times to Canadian and U.S. markets.

“This agreement fully aligns the interests of CN, the PRPA and Maher in achieving continuous performance improvement at the port,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau in a prepared statement, adding that the pact will provide transparency in data collection and encourage balanced accountability among port stakeholders.

Maher Terminals recently became the first container terminal operator to engage in electronic data interchange with CN — a major step forward in enabling the Class I and operator to quickly capture and measure all supply-chain events, including container unloading at the port and final destination arrivals, said Mongeau.
