CTA seeks more bids for Brown Line project

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will re-bid construction work for its Brown Line capacity expansion project.

The authority received two construction bids last month for $420.5 million and $541.2 million. The project’s budget is $530 million, which includes insurance, design, engineering and property acquisition.

Due to the size and complexity of the project, CTA now will break the work into smaller pieces rather than bid it out as one job, officials said in a prepared statement. Separate bids for electrical substation work, signal work and stations will attract more bidders and more competitive prices, they believe.

The Brown Line project includes rehabilitating 18 stations to accommodate eight-car trains, and enhancing the power distribution system, and signal and communication system.

The re-bid is not expected to affect the project deadline. Under its Full Funding Grant Agreement, CTA must complete the project by the end of 2009.
