Back on track: Transportation Services Index up in September

After declining 0.8 percent in August, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) rose 0.5 percent in September to 125.1 — a 6.6 percent increase compared with the September 2003 level, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
September’s Freight TSI increased 0.5 percent to 126.2 compared with August’s 125.6 and was 6.4 percent higher than the September 2003’s level of 118.7.
Meanwhile, the Passenger TSI increased 0.4 percent to 122.8 compared with August’s 122.3 index, reversing two months of declines. The September 2004 level was 7.1 percent higher than the September 2003 index of 114.7.
For the six months ending in September, the TSI rose 1.1 percent: The Freight TSI rose 0.8 percent and the Passenger TSI, 1.9 percent, during the six-month period.
The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit. The index includes historic data from 1990 to the present; changes are measured against a base year of 1996.
