The Shanghai Shentong Holdings Group recently awarded a $125.5 million contract to a consortium comprising ALSTOM Transport, CSR Nanjing Puzehen Rolling Stock Works, and two ALSTOM joint ventures to build 12 eight-car METROPOLIS trainsets. The contract includes an option for an additional 72 cars.

Owner and operator of Shanghai’s metro network, the agency will use the cars to provide additional service on its line, which is being extended 6.2 miles from Zhongshan to the Hongqiao airport.

Under its $47.4 million portion of the contract, ALSTOM will supply traction systems, auxiliary power supply kits, and train communication and control systems. The cars are scheduled to be delivered in 2008.

Meanwhile, ALSTOM Transport reached an agreement with Bouygues under which the engineering and construction firm will obtain a minority stake in the car builder.

If the sale is approved by European antitrust authorities, Bouygues would purchase a 21 percent stake currently owned by the French government. ALSTOM and Bouygues plan to integrate their services in the transport infrastructure and power generation markets.
