NS creating women's network to support career development, diversity

Norfolk Southern Railway is forming WiNS, a women's network designed to provide non-agreement female workers career support and growth opportunities, according to the Class I's March newsletter.
The network grew out of a question posed to Senior Vice President of Finance Kathryn McQuade at a recent conference asking what NS was doing to support and promote women's growth.
"I knew we were working to support women at NS [but] I wanted us to do more," McQuade said.
With help from VP of Customer Service Debbie Butler and VP of Information Technology Cindy Earhart, McQuade conducted forums in Atlanta, and Norfolk and Roanoke, Va., to explore the formation of a women's network. Because of an overwhelming response, the execs formed a coordinating team, which is developing a Web site on NS' NSight intranet and network activities in the three cities.
"[The network] provides another opportunity to enrich our diversity efforts through informal mentoring and stronger working relationships," said VP of Human Resources Tom Mullenix.
