Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) has awarded a $190.5 million construction contract to a joint venture between Stacy Witbeck and Herzog for the final design and construction of about 4.8 miles of rail infrastructure between the new Windsor station and Front Street in Healdsburg, California.
Work will include the construction of two major railroad bridges, including a new bridge spanning the Russian River, as well as new tracks, train control and safety systems, roadway crossings and a bicycle and pedestrian pathway, SMART officials said in a press release.
The contract advances the Healdsburg Extension Project from design into a major phase of construction, bringing SMART another step closer to completing its regional rail and pathway system, strengthening regional connectivity and supporting economic growth throughout Sonoma and Marin counties, officials said. Passenger service is planned to start by late 2028.
To date, about 73% of the project's secured grant funding has come from California's competitive transportation funding programs, including the Solutions for Congested Corridors Program, Local Partnership Program and the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program.
