Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) on May 31 began passenger-rail service to Windsor, California,  completing the first of three planned rail expansions across Sonoma and Marin counties.

The opening of the Windsor station sets the stage for the next phase of expansion into Healdsburg and Cloverdale, SMART officials said in a press release.

The new station connects Windsor residents to destinations throughout the North Bay and beyond and is expected to reduce traffic along the Highway 101 corridor, SMART officials said. The Windsor rail extension also included a 2.6-mile segment of the SMART Multiuse Pathway, a scenic walking and biking route that is part of the Great Redwood Trail. Once completed, the multiuse pathway will run 307 miles and connect San Francisco and Humboldt Bay.

On June 13, SMART will host a celebration of the Windsor station's opening.
