Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx late last week issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for a team to build and finance infrastructure improvements on the GO Transit's Lakeshore West rail line.

The upgrades include track improvements and other work to enable increased service at the Exhibition Station in Toronto, as well as a rehabilitation of the Mimico Station on the line.

Other work includes grade separations at Kerr Street and Burloak Drive, expansion of the Lewis Road layover facility, and upgrades to enable increased service at the Clarkson and Bronte stations.

The improvements are part of the GO Regional Express Rail (RER) project, which includes the electrification of core segments of the agency's rail network. The CA$13.5 billion RER project is expected to quadruple the number of weekly GO rail trips across the entire GO rail network by 2024-25.

"The kickoff of the Lakeshore West GO rail corridor procurement for close to a dozen projects will help Metrolinx deliver the GO expansion project on time and budget," said Metrolinx Chief Executive Officer Phil Verster in a press release.
