The Maryland Department of Transportation on Tuesday released a $21.5 billion draft budget for its six-year capital plan.
The draft Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP) for fiscal years 2026-2031 outlines a balanced plan to enhance safety, keep the system in working order and support the state's economy, MDOT officials said in a press release.
Included in the draft CTP is the Maryland Transit Administration's launch of a $1.4 billion light-rail modernization project, which calls for replacing the current fleet with modern vehicles and upgraded stations, systems and maintenance facilities. The project would be the first significant investment in the light-rail system in 30 years and positions the state for future federal transit capacity investments, MDOT officials said in the CTP.
MDOT officials will spend September through November seeking public input before finalizing the CTP and submitting it to the Maryland Legislature in January 2026 for consideration.
