The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) board yesterday approved a $9.8 billion, five-year capital plan that includes over 660 projects.

The plan, which covers fiscal years 2026-2030, includes projects to improve reliability, ensure a state of good repair and pursue expansion, MBTA officials said on the plan's web page.

State-of-good-repair projects include upgrades, accessibility improvements, rehabilitations and replacements to guideways and signals across commuter rail and light-rail lines, stations, stops and parking facilities, maintenance and administrative facilities, bridges, fleet and support vehicles.

Expansion project sin the plan call for extending commuter rail to Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton in southeastern Massachusetts. The MBTA also plans to extend the northern end of the Green Line subway from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford, MBTA officials said.

“This plan includes historic levels of funding to modernize our fleet, maintain and improve infrastructure, expand accessibility, and advance both our climate and equity goals,” said Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt in a press release.
